Engravings
The introduction of Intaglio Engraving dates back to the 13th century. The earliest example often quoted was from Germany dated 1446. In Italy from 1450 onwards copies of the works of prominent artists of the Renaissance became popular and the practice encouraged the development of the technical and creative processes involved. Engravers will use a “Burin” which produces a “V” shaped cut in the surface of the engraved plate. The resultant image is cleared of “Burr” and then ink is flooded into the grooves. The surface of the plate is then cleaned and polished so that ink remains only in the grooves. Paper is applied to the plate and a press is used to force the paper surface into the grooves, thus picking up the ink and transferring the image. Every stage in the process demands a high degree of technical competence, from the painstaking cutting of the plate to the meticulous preparation and printing. In Britain engraving reached its peak in the late 19th century. Copies of the works of popular artists were reproduced using the steel engraving process. The subtle tones and qualities of light, reproduced in monochrome from a coloured original, were dependent solely upon the artistry and technical skill of the engraver. In recognition of the partnership between artist and engraver, it is usual for both to be credited on the finished print. Traditionally the name of the artist who produced the original appears on the bottom left of the print often with the abbreviation “Pinxt.” after the name. The engraver’s name has equal prominence on the bottom right with “Sculpt.” often added. |
